A versatile winter hiking boot for active cold-weather hikers and outdoor enthusiasts who want Gore-Tex® waterproofing, Gore® insulation, genuine sheepskin temperature regulation, and Vibram® ice stud traction in a serious all-season winter platform.
The Gastein GTX Winter Boot is built for the hiker who doesn't stop when winter arrives. Cold-weather trail hiking. Winter approaches to hunting grounds. Early-morning outdoor use in icy, wet, and variable conditions. This is a winter boot with a hiker's DNA, built on a nubuck leather upper with Gore-Tex® waterproofing and Gore® insulation, and finished with the details that make it genuinely capable in serious winter conditions.
The integrated studs in the Vibram® outsole set the Gastein apart from standard winter hiking boots. On ice-covered trails, frozen ground, and the mixed winter surfaces that cold-weather outdoor use consistently delivers, the studs provide confident traction that a lug-only outsole simply can't match. Genuine sheepskin lining adds warmth through natural temperature regulation, keeping your feet warm during cold static use and avoiding the overheating that purely synthetic linings cause during active movement. Combined with Gore® insulation, the Gastein delivers layered warmth that works across the full range of output levels that winter hiking involves.
Gore-Tex® waterproof lining handles all the wet conditions that winter terrain brings. At 8 inches on a standard last with nubuck leather upper and handcrafted in Germany to Meindl's exacting standards, the Gastein GTX Winter Boot is the capable, versatile winter hiking boot for outdoor users who take winter seriously and want a boot that does too.
Made with PFAS chemicals
I've put these boots through their paces this winter, as it's been a doozie of a snowy winter in the northeast. They have more than met my expectations on comfort, traction, warmth and waterproofness.

At Meindl we know that quality boots are a significant investment. That is why we are so committed to educating our customers on the best methods of care to make sure your boots continue to perform at their peak and last for years to come.
All Meindl Boots come out of the factory treated and ready for you to get out. However, if you want to ensure the boots are in peak condition from the moment you hit the field you can give them a quick treatment with our Meindl Wet Proof and let that sit for 24 hours and then apply Meindl Sport Wax.
IMPORTANT: DO NOT heat Sport Wax before applying. Doing so can cause it to penetrate too deep and impair the leather’s breathability and wearing comfort. DO NOT apply oils or grease on any of our boots. There are two reasons: First, oil and grease products can cause boots to lose strength and stability. Second, oil or grease will migrate throughout the leather which can cause the rand and outsoles to delaminate from the boot.
Quality boots deserve care and attention. Read our full article to learn how to maintain your Meindl boots from beginning to end.
